ABOUT

Melissa Casey (she/her), Embodied Ceramics

The practice of ceramics offers an unanticipated opening to the exploration of embodiment – spinning clay shows little mercy for drifting presence.

From the comfort of my cozy 39 sq ft studio, I focus primarily on functional wares and sculptural design pieces with a design flavour that gives a nod to mid-century modern. I can’t help but notice random shapes in everyday life that bring pleasure and like to play with how to translate them into designs that accommodate curves and texture. With a current focus on resist techniques, I explore ways to incorporate glaze and raw clay as balancing elements.

In my work no two items are created identically and groupings are meant to come together as families that hold common elements, but who all have the presence to exist as individuals – a good metaphor for life.

Based in Mohkinstsis/Calgary, Alberta, I am privileged to be part of the community of artists at Workshop Studios, located in the community of Inglewood.
